Local Government AI Accelerator launches

On 29 April 2026 ai@cam announced the six projects in its Local Government AI Accelerator. The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government funds the twelve-month programme. It pairs Cambridge researchers with councils on proof-of-concept work: housing-trajectory surveys, social-housing maintenance risk, planning-map automation, fly-tipping detection, choice-based lettings, and a framework for reaching vulnerable tenants. Each project receives up to £25,000, engineering support, and a community of practice. Residents will be brought into the design, following ai@cam’s public dialogues on AI in local government.
Jess Montgomery, Director of ai@cam, described the partnership as a way for councils to share challenges and try what is possible in service delivery. Neil Lawrence, who chairs ai@cam, said the point is to learn what works in practice by working with councils and keeping public input in the loop.
The Accelerator is a field setting for the group’s AI Adoption programme: adoption studied with the institutions that have to carry it, not only written about afterwards.
