On 3 December 2024 Neil Lawrence gave the Annual Public Policy Lecture at Fitzwilliam College. The lecture is hosted by the Bennett Institute for Public Policy and the Department of Politics and International Studies. Dennis Grube chaired, and afterwards hosted a fireside chat with Jess Montgomery and Neil.
The lecture, Mind the Gap: Bridging Innovation’s Supply and Demand in the AI Era, argued that AI is following a familiar pattern: technical progress that does not meet the problems people most want addressed. Public dialogue, including the Royal Society’s 2017 work on machine learning, has asked for AI in health, education, security and social care. Much of the subsequent progress has been elsewhere. The talk treated that mismatch as a failure to connect supply and demand, and asked what would have to change if AI is to serve citizens, science and society.
