On 2 August 2023 arXiv introduced a new governance model. New bylaws took effect on 1 July 2023; the former Member and Scientific Advisory Boards were retired, and three councils were created — Editorial, Institutions, and Science.
Neil Lawrence is an inaugural member of the Science Advisory Council for the 2023–2026 term. The SAC advises on intellectual impact and long-term strategy: mission, significant expansions, standards, new fields and sections, and how scholarly work is produced and shared across disciplines. It is distinct from the Editorial Advisory Council, which handles content-moderation policy.
The appointment reflects the lab’s stake in open research infrastructure that machine learning, like other fields, depends on.
