AI needs to serve people, science, and society: a vision for ai@cam

On 29 April 2022 Neil Lawrence and Jess Montgomery published AI needs to serve people, science, and society: A vision for ai@cam. The review followed surveys and workshops with Cambridge’s AI community through winter 2021 and spring 2022, with support from Anne Ferguson-Smith and Paulina Pieprzyca.

The document sets out ai@cam as a challenge-led University mission: connect Cambridge’s AI research across disciplines; build partnerships with practitioners and affected communities; create platforms for innovation and knowledge transfer; and keep equity and inclusion in the design of what gets built. It treats AI both as a research field and as an accelerator of work elsewhere, and warns that benefits and harms are unevenly shared unless universities help close digital divides.

A University of Cambridge story accompanied the launch. The PDF of the review remains the public record of that vision. The mission’s first public programme announcement came later, with the AI-deas academic unicorns.
