On 28 April 2025 Neil Lawrence appeared on BBC Radio 4’s The Briefing Room for the episode Can the UK become an AI superpower?. David Aaronovitch chaired; the other guests were Dame Wendy Hall (University of Southampton), Eden Zoller (Omdia) and Jeremy Kahn (Fortune).
The programme takes as its cue the Prime Minister’s ambition for the UK to become “one of the great AI superpowers” and the government’s plan to use AI across private and public sectors. Neil’s contribution sits with a theme he has pressed elsewhere: treating AI as one central supply-side race — compute, hyperscalers, frontier models — misses where value is made, workflow by workflow, in the hands of people who understand the work.
