National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare

On 26 September 2025 the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency established the National Commission into the Regulation of AI in Healthcare. The Commission is an expert, non-statutory advisory body. Its remit covers software and AI-enabled medical devices, and wider questions of accountability, transparency, clinical practice, organisational governance and system-wide assurance.
Neil Lawrence is a commissioner and chairs the Technology Working Group, which identifies and evaluates frontier AI technologies and how they interact with regulation. The group’s project page records the Cambridge role.
