On 24 October 2019 the Alan Turing Institute announced the first five Turing AI Fellows, appointed with the Office for AI and UKRI as part of the government’s AI skills and talent package. Neil Lawrence was named Senior Turing AI Fellow — the first such senior post — for a five-year programme beginning in December 2019.
The fellowship centres on machine learning systems design: the full pipeline from data acquisition to decision-making, with monitoring for performance, interpretability and fairness, and attention to the availability, quality and ethics of data. That agenda became the lab’s AutoAI programme — extending AutoML toward system-wide deployment, maintenance and monitoring.
Coverage of the wave of appointments includes Diginomica. Neil’s own note on the fellowship is here.
