The AI Moment: Decisions, Information, and the Atomic Human

The AI moment

The AI moment (executive framing)

  • The “AI moment” was a branding + investment shift: modern machine learning became “AI”, and expectations jumped ahead of delivery reality.
  • Don’t confuse intelligent systems (scaled decision-making) with intelligent entities (robot-people).
  • For leaders, the question is practical: what decisions are being automated, with what data, and who bears the downside when it’s wrong?

Four executive questions (default frame)

  • What decision are we changing?
  • What information does it require (and what’s missing)?
  • How can it fail (and how will we notice early)?
  • Who is accountable (and what is the escalation path)?

Challenges

  1. Paradoxes of the Data Society
  2. Quantifying the Value of Data
  3. Privacy, loss of control, marginalization

Preview of the course

  • Intent and incentives: what systems optimise for vs what organisations intend.
  • Uncertainty and decision quality: thresholds, escalation, and “pause when unsure”.
  • Trust and accountability in the agent era: delegation is a choice; responsibility is not.
  • Operating model: roles, escalation, simulation, and incident response (“mission control”).
